Chef Jagger Gordon is a shining example of how one person can make a difference. Gordon says Canadians waste an average of 873 lbs. of food per person, per year, at a cost of approximately $30 billion. These figures are topped off with the statistics that tell us 40 percent of food produced in our country ends up directly in landfills. While perfectly good food is wasted everyday, many individuals and families go to bed hungry. As part of Feed it Forward’s mandate, Gordon is also actively petitioning for the government to enact legislation that forbids restaurants and supermarkets from wasting edible food. The petition proposes following a similar model to France’s recent legislation, which states that grocery stores must donate food to local organizations that will either reuse the food or donate it to local farms for compost. If you want to sign this petition here’s the link.
