Although plastics have become a dirty word the reality is, we can’t live without them. So, here’s the question- how much of it do we really need? Environmentalists are urging consumers to throw out the old idea of the three R’s — reduce, reuse and recycle — and instead adopt the five R’s: refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle. Our grandparents reused cloth bags as part of their daily routine. Fruits and vegetables were weighed and placed, as is, into grocery bags. Today it isn’t necessary to put them in single use plastic bags, we have simply adjusted our habits because they are available to us. What will we do when single use plastics are banned? Let’s not wait to be forced into it. Let’s start creating the habit of choosing another option right now.
