We know from experience that community organizations can achieve considerable success in reaching people to engage them in activities that improve environmental awareness and promotes collective voluntary action, as well as individual behaviour changes. Dwindling government grants, the loss of public spaces such as community centers and parks and the closure of other public services due to financial cutbacks mean that many groups are having to deal with significant challenges with a reducing level of resources. The leaders of even the biggest businesses recognize that credibility within local communities is fundamental to commercial success. This means operating responsibility in terms of employment practices, supply chains and natural resources.
